The Juvenile Division of the Eighth Circuit Solicitor’s Office prosecutes juvenile delinquency cases in Family Court throughout Abbeville, Greenwood, Laurens and Newberry counties.
South Carolina’s juvenile justice system is designed to protect the public, hold juveniles accountable for their actions and provide opportunities for rehabilitation. Depending on the circumstances of a case, a juvenile may remain in the community under supervision, participate in a diversion or treatment program, or receive another disposition ordered by the Family Court.
Juvenile Cases
Family Court handles delinquency proceedings involving juveniles accused of committing criminal offenses. The Solicitor’s Office represents the State in the prosecution of these cases.
Cases are handled according to South Carolina law and the individual circumstances of the juvenile and the alleged offense.
Rehabilitation & Accountability
The juvenile justice system seeks to balance public safety and accountability with opportunities for rehabilitation.
Depending on the case, a juvenile may participate in diversion, treatment, counseling, community-based services or other programs intended to address the factors contributing to delinquent behavior.
Serious Offenses
South Carolina law provides circumstances in which certain juvenile cases may be transferred to General Sessions Court, where the juvenile is prosecuted through the adult criminal justice system.
Whether a case remains in Family Court or is transferred depends on factors established by South Carolina law, including the juvenile’s age, the alleged offense and the circumstances of the case.
